A mother, Chinyere, has surprised her son, Promise Okoro, with a goat worth N120,000 during his department’s sign-out ceremony at the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State.
The unusual gift attracted the attention of students after Chinyere arrived at the institution with the goat and presented it to her son, drawing cheers from his colleagues.
Chinyere explained that the gesture was her way of rewarding Promise for making her proud, obeying her instructions and successfully completing his studies without getting involved in cultism.
According to her, she had promised to give her son a special gift if he completed his education without disappointing the family.
She said she could not afford to buy him an expensive car, but decided that a goat would be a meaningful way to demonstrate her love and appreciation.
“When he was going to school, I told him not to affiliate himself with cultism and to make me proud by not dropping out. I told him that if he made me proud, I was going to surprise him. He didn’t disappoint me,” she said.
Chinyere added that her son had remained respectful to members of the family and others around him. She also described him as a footballer and said the goat was a symbol of her affection for him.
She disclosed that she bought the goat for N120,000, stressing that she would have spent more if that was what it took to fulfil the promise she made to her son.
“I bought the goat for N120,000. Even if it was N200,000, I would have tried my best to come with that goat,” she said.
The mother also expressed happiness over the reaction of students as she walked towards her son with the animal.
Chinyere said the cheers from the students made the moment even more memorable, adding that she could tell her son was equally excited.
For Promise, however, the surprise initially left him confused.
He said that when some of his coursemates called him and he heard students shouting, “say yes,” he thought they were celebrating an engagement ceremony.
He was therefore shocked when he discovered that his mother had come to the school with a goat as a graduation gift for him.
“I was surprised when my coursemate called me to come and see my mum because she brought a goat. I was even asking if she knew my mum because I wasn’t convinced,” he said.
Promise said he was deeply emotional and happy about the gesture, adding that he felt no embarrassment about receiving such an unusual gift from his mother.
The presentation has since attracted attention on social media, with many Nigerians praising Chinyere for finding a unique way to celebrate her son’s academic achievement and encourage him for completing his studies successfully.
