Former Super Eagles captain, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has shared the story behind the nickname that became a global football brand and a defining part of his illustrious career.
Speaking during an appearance on the ObiOne podcast, the Nigerian football legend explained that the nickname originated from his childhood days when he and his brothers regularly played football in their neighbourhood.
According to Okocha, there were several boys named Austin in the area, making it difficult for friends and neighbours to identify them. To distinguish him from others, people began referring to him as “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother,” a reference to one of his siblings.
He said the name gradually evolved until “Jay-Jay” became his permanent identity. “It started in the neighbourhood where we grew up. There were many Austins, so people called me Austin Jay-Jay’s brother, and from there, Jay-Jay stayed,” he said.
Okocha added that the nickname gained further prominence when he travelled abroad, as many people found it easier to pronounce “Jay-Jay” than his given name, Augustine. This led him to officially adopt the name, even including it in his passport. In a humorous remark, he said he still “pays royalties” to his brother for using the name.
Born Augustine Azuka Okocha, the former Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe midfielder remains one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers. Renowned for his exceptional dribbling skills, creativity and flair, Jay-Jay Okocha’s nickname has become inseparable from his enduring football legacy.
