World Biodiversity Day: Expert stresses need for Nigeria to engage more in Agroforestry

By Chidinma Ewunonu-Aluko, Ibadan As the world observes Biodiversity Day, a Conservationist, Gene Bank Curator, at National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan, Dr Olagorite Adetula, has stressed the need for Nigeria to engage more in Agroforestry to restore biodiversity. Adetula made the remark on Monday while presenting a keynote address at the World Biodiversity Day celebration organised by Initiative For Biodiversity Conservation In Sub-Saharan Africa (IBCSSA), held in Ibadan. The programme was organised for some Secondary School students and Adetula spoke on the theme "From Agreement To Action; Build Back Biodiversity". How Tomato ebola can be managed ---NATPAN

As tomato ebola also known as Tuta Absoluta is destroying tomato farms across some states in the country, the chairman, National Tomato Growers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NATPAN) Kaduna state chapter, Rabiu Aliyu Zuntu has explained how consumers can manage the outbreak. The development is said to have caused an increase in the price of tomatoes in the market He said that the outbreak of the insect took all tomato farmers in the north especially Kaduna state by surprise, adding that, tomato production and supply this year would reduced by wide margin if government fails to intervene. Speaking in the same vein, a NAPTAN secretary who was affected by the tomato ebola in Kaduna state, Mallam Haruna said the insect had ravaged 90percent of his  tomato farms.
