IMACOSA, 1991 Set celebrates re-union in grandstyle

By Tomisin Monday, Owo.

In a bid to rescue public schools from imminent collapse, members of old students' associations have been charged to compliment government's effort by organising themselves into a network of alternative means of funding the Nigerian public schools across the country.

Speaking recently as the guest lecturer at the re-union and fund raising event, organised by the Imade College Owo Old Students' Association (IMACOSA, 1991 Set), the Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ondo State Chapter, Mr Sunday Afolayan, called on public spirited individuals and old students to rise up to the challenges of salvaging the deteriorating educational system in the country since government, at all levels, are no longer paying adequate attention to the public school system.

In a lecture entitled "The place of alumni associations in the development of their Alma Maters", Afolayan - a senior lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, decried the long years of neglect of public schools, especially at primary and secondary levels, on the part of government.

This, according to him, has led to falling standard, unconducive learning environment, frustration of staff due to irregular salary, poor and obsolete teaching facilities, among others.

He explained that the ugly tide may lead to  breeding of undisciplined youths into a gang of criminals, who may constitute potential threats to the future greatness of the country, if not checkmated.

He counselled that old students should gear their effort towards revamping dilapidated structures, provision of laboratory equipment and recreational facilities, text books, awarding of scholarship to gifted and indigent students, participating in voluntary career mentoring and role modelling, among others, in order to restore hope in the minds of the younger generations.

Speaking earlier, the President of the set, Surv. Olumide Omojola, called on members to use the occasion to foster unity and give back to the institution that nurtured them to maturity.

"I therefore use this opportunity to call on those of us that life has smiled upon to remember the less privileged among us and also give generously towards our set project, which will help to give the school a face-lift when completed", he stressed.

The President General of IMACOSA worldwide, Alhaji Kareem Isiaka Adesina, also an alumnus and former principal of the college, lamented that apart from payment of teachers' salaries, no public school in Ondo State has received any tangible funding from government for the past twenty years or more.

Corroborating this, the current principal, Mr Yemi Farayola, explained that without the support of old students, no school can survive again.

He appreciated the efforts of the old students for coming to the school aids, especially now that government is overwhelmed by enormous financial challenges.
