After three grueling days of thorough search for Motunrayo John, a student of Mount Carmel Girls Secondary School in Ikare, swept away by flood recently, her lifeless body has been recovered, downstream.
It was learnt that her remains was discovered at the back of a hotel at Ugbe Akoko, in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The deceased was said to have been swept away by a flood last Monday while she was returning home after school hours.
In the heat of the incident, the principal of the school, Mrs Ajoke Asiwaju, was said to have reported the matter to the Ikare Akoko Police Division, after the pupil could not be found in hours.
However, the Divisional Police Officer for Ikare Akoko, Mr Olatujoye Akinwale, yesterday confirmed the discovery of the corpse which he said had been released to the family for burial.
Meanwhile, Mount Carmel Girls' Secondary held a candlelight procession yesterday in memory of their ill-fated colleague.
During the solemm procession organised by the students of the school, the Chairman of the Parents' Teachers' Association of the school, Mr Omoniyi Alo, admonished the students to always exercise caution in the rainy season.
The father of late Motunrayo, Mr. Ade John, a farmer from Iboropa Akoko, described the death of his daughter as shocking, sad and devastating.
Narrating the incident, John said, “ I felt bitter when I received the sad news while I was hoping to pick her up from school in Ikare.
“As I was coming from Iboropa where I live, I heard people discussing in hushed tones that a student was swept away by flood. Before I reached the river where the incident happened, I saw her food flask on the road”
“Immediately, I alighted from my motorcycle and I also saw her some of her books on the road, it was then I was told she fell into the gutter.
“Even on Monday, I was the one who went to pick her, I met her at the school gate, Even on that fateful day. while I noticed it was cloudy that day, I asked her to take along her sweater against the cold weather and I gave her N200."
He continued: “Since we couldn't see her traces inside the river, I went to call some Hausa people who charged me N30, 000 before they could search for her inside the river”
“Her mother is distressed already, over thgevdeath of her beloved daughter. I am still struggling to cater for my family when this unfortunate incident happened,” he lamented.
