THE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (NEC) MEETING OF THE NIGERIA ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN JOURNALISTS (NAWOJ), IN ASABA, DELTA STATE CAPITAL ON JULY 15, 2022.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) held its Meeting at Hotel Benizia in Asaba, Delta State on 14th July, 2022.
The meeting, which was presided over by the National President of NAWOJ, Comrade Ladi Bala, extensively discussed issues concerning the Association and the state of the nation, after which it resolved as follows:
1. That all political parties and their candidates should promote inclusivenes and unity in Nigeria, as the nation prepares for the next general elections.
2. The NEC in session called on the Federal Government to ensure that the ASUU strike is called off in the shortest possible time, to hasten the resumption of academic activities in public tertiary institutions nationwide.
3. That Government should ensure the repairs and maintenance of all deplorable roads across the country.
4. The NEC equally urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgent concern, address the issue of insecurity that has eaten deep into the fabric of the country, with a view to finding lasting solution to it.
5. It decried the alarming rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria, which according to UNICEF statistics is well over 10 million children. The NEC said this needs urgent attention.
6. NAWOJ demanded that the National Gender policy on 35 percent Affirmative Action should be implemented.
7. The NEC in session said women should be encouraged to get their PVCs and ensure they exercise their franchise during the 2023 general elections, while underaged voting should be discouraged.
8. It urged State Governments to ensure the domestication of the VAPP law, and also build and strengthen Sexual and Gender Based Violence Reference Centres to handle SGBV related cases and cater for the survivors.
9. The NEC took a critical look at the increasing cost of products and services in Nigeria and called on the Federal Government to urgently set up a mechanism to check the rate of inflation and high cost of living in the country.
10. The NEC said governments should strengthen the Primary Health Care system to check the rate of mother and infant mortality.
11. NAWOJ also commended political parties who picked women as running mates in the build up to the 2023 general elections.
12. Finally, the NEC in session commended the governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for the wonderful and successful hosting of its meeting in Asaba, Delta State capital.
The Communiqué Drafting Committee had the Chairperson of Lagos State NAWOJ, Adeola Ekine as Chairman; the National Trustee for Zone F, Peace Sinclair as Secretary and the Chairperson of Kwara State NAWOJ, Ayobola Olupinla as Member.
