Nysc takes Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme to Akoko community

The National Youth Service Corps Ondo State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has disclosed that the primary concern of the Scheme is to ensure that citizens and residents enjoy a healthy living.

The State Coordinator made the disclosure when she flagged-off the second quarter NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme at Ugbe Community in Akoko North East Local Government.

The HIRD programme, according to Mrs. Ani coincided with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the laudable Scheme is designed to complement the government at providing basic medicare to all and sundry.

She hinted that the programme was an initiative of the NYSC Director General which is geared towards reaching out to the rural communities with healthcare services delivered by corps medical personnel of the Scheme.


The NYSC Ondo State boss explained that the programme is meant to medically promote the quality of life of rural dwellers apart from supporting the State Government in the provision of health care to citizens and residents.

"Let me add that the programme is equally targeted at further increasing the broad impact of the Scheme and expanding its values to her critical stakeholders at all levels in the society, and a positive solidification of the laudable Scheme as an enduring institution of national unity and integration".

"National Youth Service Corps has come of age. To have survived all the challenges since establishment 50 years ago is an eloquent testimony that the Scheme has recorded tremendous achievements in critical areas of national need such as education, agriculture, healthcare, rural infrastructures, entertainment industry, sports, technology etc".

The State Coordinator while urging the people of the community to take advantage of the programme which is designed to improve their health situations, said that the medical outreach is being handled by competent and professional corps medical personnel in various fields associated with human medicine.


The Chief Executive Officer of the Scheme in the Sunshine State appreciated the supportive role of the Ondo State Government, Akoko North East Local Government area, the Olugbe in Council, Philanthropists as well as community leaders in the state who are always identifying with the noble Scheme.

The Executive Chairman of Akoko North East Local Government, Honourable Asimiyu Omojola Adekunle who was represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Honourable Amuda Abiola appealed to NYSC to post more corps members to the council area because of the invaluable contributions of the successive members of the service corps in the Local Government over the years.

The traditional ruler-elect of Ugbe, HRH Oba Ilufemiloye Adefemi, Ajiboye II represented by Otunba Oluwole Babasanya lauded the management of NYSC for always attracting beneficial programmes and projects to the community.


The Kabiyesi-elect promised that his community will continue to create enabling environment for corps members to actualise their dreams within the area.

The HIRD programme in Ugbe Community was part of activities lined up to commemorate the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the establishment of the NYSC having been established in May, 1973.
