Celebrating the Golden jubilee of the National Youth Service Corps ( Scheme) , the Oyo State Coordinator, Comrade Odoba Abel Oche has called on everyone, corporate organizations and stakeholders to join hands in safe guarding and promoting NYSC as a national asset which has remained a pivot of national unity and development.
He said the scheme has become a leading light of youths organizations not just in Africa but the entire globe as envisioned by the founding fathers.
Odoba made this call during the anniversary prelude unity walk, marking the 50 years of the scheme's establishment, the programme which was held simultaneously in all the States and the National Headquarters.
The State Coordinator led the corps members and members of staff on a walk to enlighten the populace on its landmark achievements in fostering national unity and its numerous contributions to National development.
Speaking on its establishment, the SC said the Scheme was established by decree 24 of 22nd May, 1973 as a child of necessity. Prior to the establishment of the scheme, the country was bedeviled by ethnic mistrust which resulted into a thirty month civil war that left millions of casualties on both sides of the conflicts.
He said it was on the cessation of the hostilities that the then leadership of the country, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, came to the resolve of establishing National Youth Service Corps, to begin the process of building a country emerging from the throes of the civil war into an egalitarian and cohesive society, devoid of hates and stereotypes.
Comrade Odoba equally spoke on Community Development Service which is one of the four cardinal programmes of the scheme. He said posting of corps members to different local governments has enabled them to initiate and execute viable projects, through the mobilization of their host communities.
In the sphere of education and health, the scheme has continued to play vital roles in raising educated young Nigerians as well as satisfying the health needs of people especially the rural dwellers, through the NYSC health initiative for rural dwellers ( HIRD)
Odoba also reiterated corps members involvement in the conduct of election and other national programmes which has conferred some measures of credibility to the electoral process, attracting national and international accolades to the scheme.
Remarkably, the SC added that posting of corps members to states other than their state of origin has pulled together youths from divers culture, religions and social backgrounds who lived together for the period of service, carrying out their Primary Assignments in the spirit of nationalism.
The walk that held within the metropolis of Ibadan, the State Capital had members of Staff and Corps members actively participating.
The Men of the Nigeria Police, FRSC and NSCDC provided security and safety during the exercise
