FUOYE: Faculty Of Arts produces first PhD student

The Faculty of Arts and Department of English and Literary Studies, Federal University Oye Ekiti, has produced its first PhD graduant.

The defense and presentation was successfully done by Mrs. Ayobami Opoola in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in English Language at the School of Post-graduate Studies (PGS), Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.

The Thesis entitled “The Effects of Medium of Instructions (English-Yoruba) on the Learning Outcome of Selected Primary School Pupils in Oyo State, Nigeria” x-rayed importance of bilingualism as one of the effective ways of impacting knowledge especially in our primary schools and the earliest age.

Mrs. Opoola dissected impact of bilingualism alongside mono-language and gave a verdict that dual languages was far more better for learning in primary schools medium of Instructions, predicating its impacts and usefulness on primary schools’ pupils.

Apparently satisfied, the external examiner, Prof. Ikotun described Dr. Opoola’s Theses as a very good concept on socio-linguistic with bias in bilingual languages.

He said: “Let me thank the PG School of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti for inviting me to this place. This is a very good concept on socio-linguistic which has to do with bilingual languages which can be used to pass information to people everywhere in the world.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Ayobami Opoola in the course of her presentation, recommended that dual language instructions strategy should be adopted, urging governments at all levels to ensure effective supervision and monitoring of policies when finally adjusted to favour dual instructions.

She, however, recommended that the parents who were the major stakeholders should try and support the use of dual instructions for a better learning.
Speaking to FUOYEnews, Dr. Ayobami Opoola said “I feel very happy to be a Ph.D holder. But I just thank God Almighty that has taken me this far.”

She went on: “There are challenges and the ability to overcome them makes you a man. We have so many challenges. Is it the location where you want to carry out research you want to talk about, is it research assistant that will not cooperate with you sometimes if you don’t give out what you suppose to give and you must be buoyant if you want to carry out research because you need to give here and there.

“I have passed through more than three Universities and I have realized that FUOYE is one of the Universities that should be reckoned with. They know what they are doing especially, my supervisor. And they do not shirk from what they know best. At every stage of my research, we were working together.

“The same goes to other staff of the faculty especially the department of English and Literary Studies where I have studied as a student.

They all rally round and that have being what they used to do. Even the Masters Students who graduated before us, experienced the same thing.

“Supervisor and Staff rallied round the students to ensure that they achieve success at the end of the day. I enjoyed the same thing. They rallied round me and here I am today as a Ph.D holder.”
