Ondo CP hosts Nysc Mgt, harps on welfarism of corps members

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Peter Oladipo has declared that his Command has a responsibility towards the National Youth Service Corps, especially as it concerns the welfare of corps members.

The astute Commissioner of Police made the declaration when he hosted the NYSC management team in Ondo State led by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani at the Command Headquarters, Akure, the state capital.

Oladipo, who recalled with nostalgic feelings his participation in NYSC programme in Imo State during the 1986/87 service year disclosed that he would not have been where he is today without the laudable Scheme.

"Helping NYSC is like helping ourselves because the solid foundation laid by the founding fathers of the noble Scheme in which I am a proud beneficiary and ambassador is what has propelled me to where God has placed me today. If not for the Scheme who prepared me for the sensitive position I am occupying today, my story would have been different and I appreciate the Scheme for re-positioning the future of our teeming Nigerian youths worldwide".

"NYSC has remained a strong and unbroken cord uniting this beautiful country. So, in the natural context, the graduate youths, who despite the mounting pressures from family and loved ones choose to stay in their comfort zones move to other regions to strengthen integration and understudy the differences and similarities of the constituents that made up the country, then the Nigerian Police owe them a duty to protect them from all threats and harms, and this is what we have been doing since the establishment of the Scheme close to 51 years ago".

The Police Chief who hails from Lagos State but has traversed the length and breadth of this country lauded the NYSC managers for the quality of mentorship the Scheme has been bequeathing to the Nigerian graduate youths.

"Kudos should be given to the managers of this laudable Scheme right from the top management team to the operational hierarchy in all the states of the federation. Youths are highly sensitive, mobile and love to do things their own way irrespective of the consequences but NYSC is doing a great job in building, moulding and mentoring these productive strata of the economy to becoming responsible leaders of the country in a foreseeable future" he said.

Earlier in her speech, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani congratulated the Commissioner of Police on his well deserved appointment to oversee the Command in Ondo State.

The State Coordinator who has been following the trajectory of the new Police helmsman in the Sunshine State asserted that she had no doubt that the state will benefit immensely from his wealth of experience and leadership prowess.

"The CP Sir, I am confident that you will bring your wide and varied experience to bear on the security architecture of Ondo State. The capacity you displayed in previous appointments and assignments will no doubt assist you to a larger extent by ridding the state of criminal elements. The success recorded when you were DCP in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Oyo State some years back laid credence to this".

Ani disclosed that her mission at the Ondo State Police Headquarters is to gather intelligence and security support for the corps members serving in the state and those that will be reporting to camp for the 2024 Batch 'A' (Stream 1) orientation course.

"I am here to solicit for your operational support to the Scheme and direct the Area Commanders and the Divisional Police Officers to make it their statutory duty to ensure that corps members in their respective areas and divisions have unflinching protection from the command.

Responding, the Security Chief who attended Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye and University of Lagos, Akoka for his Bachelor and Master's degree in Philosophy respectively declared that they have no other job aside protecting the lives and properties of citizens and residents of Nigeria.

"We have no other job than to secure and protect the lives of citizens and residents of Ondo State, corps members inclusive. I have already directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Muhammed Rabiu to send signal to the Area Commands and Divisional Police Headquarters to monitor what happens around NYSC formations throughout the state.

"Meanwhile, I want to request that you equally direct the NYSC Zonal Inspectors and Local Government Inspectors to avail the Area Commanders and DPOs the locational addresses of all Corps Lodges, NYSC Family Houses and Residential buildings occupied by corps members in their respective Zones and Local Governments for easy operational procedures".

"Let me add this important information, kindly inform your personnel as well as corps members that the Police Command will no longer tolerate the use of cars without number plates or covered number plate as any vehicle with such will be impounded and offenders prosecuted according to the laws of the land. No one will shield offenders from being prosecuted", he warned.

He promised to leverage on the existing relationships to strengthen the synergy between the Police and NYSC in the Sunshine State.

DCP (Operations), Muhammed Rabiu emphasised on the need for the NYSC management to impress it upon corps members to shun night journeys and break the journeys where necessary in which the State Coordinator said that the advise has become the song which the NYSC sings to their ears on daily basis.
