The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ondo State, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani has asserted that it is imperative for members of the service corps to be up to speed as regards the operations of the Scheme.
The State Coordinator made the assertion in her opening remarks at the maiden Inter-Platoon Quiz Competition put in place to gauge the comprehension and understanding of the corps members during the orientation course and by extension, the scheme.
Ani said that management came up with the novel idea to reduce apprehension and unco-ordinated attitude of corps members when they report at their various places of primary assignments after the orientation course.
"Gentlemen Corps Members, the state of mind of majority of you immediately after you leave the orientation course is appalling as most of you do not want to have anything to do with lectures again. I need to tell you that all NYSC lectures on camp have specific goal and whosoever abide by the teachings of the scheme will be much better in life".
She said that the representatives of the various platoons should be proud to represent their platoons as they are already worthy ambassadors of the platoon.
"You have made history today alongside several others who have represented their platoons in one competition or the other because in the foreseeable future when the glory of God shall come on you in greater dimensions, you will be remembered as someone who stood in the gap for majority of your colleagues".
She continued, 'NYSC is not only interested in you passing through the Scheme but has set machineries in motion to ensure that the Scheme passes through you and influence you in many positive ways. Most of the personalities that you are seeing today who passed through the Scheme have become public analysts, opinion moulders and influencers because what they enjoyed while serving their fatherland opened ways for them'.
The State Coordinator thanked the Lectures and Languages Committee under a cerebral and meticulous officer, Mr. Emmanuel Sunday Orimolade for coming up with such an ingenious idea.
"While I am thanking everyone for being part of this history, I need to place on records, the quality of service the Lectures and Languages Committee put up. Where we had challenges, the team handled the assignments with all manner of professionalism".
Speaking earlier, the Head of Lectures and Languages Committee, Mr. Emmanuel Sunday Orimolade expressed appreciation to the State Coordinator for keying into the idea when presented to her.
"It is with great joy and every sense of fulfillment that I want to express profoundly my appreciation to the State Coordinator who did not only embrace the programme but offered to personally sponsor it and this is an hallmark of great leaders who encourages their subordinates who come up with ideas that will further engender administrative competence".
Orimolade disclosed that the Committee will go back to the drawing board to perfect the perceived or noticeable lapses associated with first implementation of ideas.
He thanked the camp officials for standing up and identifying with the committee despite the accumulated tiredness in the last three weeks of pursuing vigorously all programmes, activities and events.
The event which made representatives of each of the platoons to answer questions relating to all Branches and Units of NYSC has no doubt assisted the corps members to know the importance of camp lectures which will give them soft landing at their various places of primary assignment.
At the end of the intellectual exercise, number 6 platoon emerged winner while number 4 and 5 platoons tied respectively in second position. At this stage, the generous nature of the State Coordinator came to fore as she had to made extra cash available to the second position who had two winners.
The corps members who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the academic exercise have armed themselves with enough information and insight that will assist them during the service year.
