The acting Director, Legal Unit, NYSC Directorate Headquarters, Abuja, Barrister Christopher Ugar Ogar has disclosed that corps members should not see the NYSC uniform as immunity to commit criminality.
The acting Director made this statement of fact in his address to the 2024 Batch 'A' (Stream II) corps members during his visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko.
Ogar, who advised the corps members to avoid any act that is inimical to promoting and protecting the image of the Scheme declared that NYSC has done much for the country and members of the service corps should not involve in anything that will attract negative criticism to the organisation.
The Learned Gentleman said that for the Scheme not to attract severe public criticism, Corps members should maintain official dress code and resist the reckless urge to embark on night journeys but rather engage in sensitisation and advocacy campaign to make the country a better place to be.
The foremost Legal Officer of the Scheme averred that corps members should see their mobilisation and subsequent deployment as a privilege to change the narratives of not living to expectations to giving a committed and selfless service in their places of primary assignment and host communities.
The acting Director, while admonishing the corps members not to travel without permission, equally advised those that would be posted to post-primary institutions to avoid over-socialisation with students as any untoward misbehaviours will attract severe penalties from NYSC in line with the NYSC Act and Bye-Laws.
"Before I end this address, I want to encourage you to join the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme so that your future will not in any way be threatened. SAED will better your lots and I want you to invest your time, money and resources into it for better today guaranteed future" he concluded.
In his brief, the State Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Amaramiro Pepple informed the acting Director that the corps members are disciplined and well behaved, saying that the crop of corps members deployed to the state were indeed good ambassadors of their respective institutions of graduation and families.
The State Coordinator disclosed that camp officials are working intimately as a team while the security of the camp was enhanced with the collaboration of Western Nigeria Security outfit, code named Amotekun who provided routine patrol outside the camp perimeter fence.
The visitor was entertained by the representatives of the corps members who showcased the culture of the major tribes in the country.
The visiting Director commended the State Coordinator for the neatness of the camp and for implementing the policy of the Scheme.
