The tragic incident, which took place on Monday evening around the Origbara river axis in Odigbo Local Government area of Ondo State, has been revealed how a man, Emmanuel, killed and beheaded his younger brother, Daniel.
Emmanuel, a 26-year-old man, reportedly lured his younger brother, 17-year-old Daniel, to the riverside under unclear circumstances.
According to eyewitness accounts, residents became suspicious of Emmanuel’s movements near the river. A local source said he was seen acting nervously and attempting to cross the river with a bag. When confronted, the gruesome truth emerged the bag contained the severed head of his younger brother.
Eyewitnesses raised the alarm, and local youths quickly mobilised. Shocked and enraged by the discovery, they apprehended Emmanuel and dragged him to the town center, where he was severely beaten.
A resident of the community, who pleaded anonymity narrated that the suspect orchestrated the act, while he deceived his younger brother to the river.
“We don’t really know the exact time he killed his brother, but his movement around the scene raised suspicion.
“While he put the severed head of his brother inside a bag, he crossed the Origbara River to the other part of the community, looking suspicious.
“Upon noticing this, I raised the alarm. I saw the suspect holding a human head. I am shocked at what could have led him to think of killing and beheading his own younger brother.” the resident narrated
The motive behind the brutal killing remains unclear. However, some residents suspect it may be linked to ritual activity.
After the mob attack, Emmanuel was rescued by the authorities and taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries sustained during the beating a few hours later, around midnight on Tuesday.
It was gathered that both the suspect and the victim were sons of a policeman popularly known as “Awilo” in the community.
The Ondo State Police Command has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident.
According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, has ordered the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough and discreet investigation.
