Members of the senior staff association of Nigerian universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic staff union (NASU) on Thursday stage a protest at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti ( both at Oye and Ikole campus) over unmet demands
The protest, which took place in front of the University Administrative Block, on Thursday was marked by peaceful demonstrations, prayer sessions, and solidarity songs, with members displaying placards calling for justice, fairness, and improved welfare.
Newsline NG learnt that the protest is part of the nationwide action decided upon by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Of the two unions, at the expiration of a two-week ultimatum they gave to the federal government to address their demands, which are mainly welfare matters
Addressing the gathering, the SSANU FUOYE Branch Chairman, Comrade Faleye, emphasized the need for the Federal Government to urgently address the demands of Nigerian workers, particularly those in tertiary institutions, to avoid further industrial crises.
According to him "This protest was triggered by the expiration of several ultimatums and the government's failure to address key issues affecting university non-academic staff, including the unjust disbursement of ₦50 billion earned allowances, delay in renegotiation of agreements, and non-payment of outstanding salaries and allowances.
"As a union, we are committed to dialogue but will continue to resist neglect and unfair treatment" He said
He however urged the Federal Government to yield to their demands to ensure the smooth running of Nigerian universities.
