Achievers University, Owo has inducted 26 graduates from the department of public health.
The chairman of council and pro-chancellor of the institution, Professor Bode Ayorinde during the induction on Wednesday, urged the inductees to be of good character, which is embedded in the core values of the institution.
“Beyond the fact that you are a holder of a certificate today, is the need to be of good behavior. Be good ambassadors of this great institution. Where your character will take you to, your certificates may not be able to. So, I enjoin you to use your knowledge effectively, uphold integrity and be prepare to lead,” he said.
He added that the university will leave no stone unturned in its pursuit of academic excellence.
Embracing innovation
Dr. Ndidi Aishat Okunnuga, a consultant radiation clinical oncologist has urged public health graduates to embrace innovation, courage, and adaptability in shaping the future of healthcare.
She made the call while delivering a lecture titled “Innovating for Impact: Embracing the Unknown in Public Health” at the 2nd Induction Ceremony of the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Achievers University, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
Dr. Okunnuga described public health as a discipline centered on improving people’s total well-being, stressing that global challenges such as climate change, health inequality, and misinformation demand new approaches and open-mindedness.
Speaking on the need for innovation, she explained that it goes beyond technology or new gadgets, but involves creative thinking, collaboration, empathy, and evidence-based action to solve human problems. She cited the COVID-19 pandemic as an example that taught the world how resilience, adaptation, and innovation are crucial to survival.
According to her, embracing the unknown means being ready to learn, take risks, and lead change under uncertain conditions.
She urged the inductees to see leadership in public health as a call to vision, compassion, and effective collaboration, noting that many global health breakthroughs, such as eradicating smallpox and reducing maternal mortality, began with uncertain steps pursued with conviction.Buy vitamins and supplements
Dr. Okunnuga also emphasized that true innovation must promote equity and serve humanity. While acknowledging the promise of digital and artificial intelligence technologies in predicting outbreaks and improving communication, she warned that innovations must not widen inequalities.
She called for inclusive community engagement, ethical standards, and purposeful action to ensure fair access to healthcare.
Earlier, the vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Omolola Irinoye reminded the new inductees on the need to uphold discipline and professionalism in their practice.
She said Achievers University is happy to be part of their history, having provided them the training needed to survive in the 21st century.
Also, the provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Joseph Fatukasi, represented by Prof. Akintoye Famakinde, expressed immense happiness at the graduands, noted that public health provides a platform, where professionals from various disciplines (Arts, Science, Accounting, Medical, etc) work together to improve and promote health and healthy lifestyles.
Similarly, the head of department of public health, Dr. Mrs. Ajoke Akinola, spoke about the opportunities, innovation and the impact of the discipline to the society.
“From designing tech-based health solutions to influencing global policy, public health gives you the tools to shape the future. Innovating in mental health outreach for underserved populations. Designing health communication strategies to combat misinformation and so on. Innovation in public health isn’t just about technology, it’s about creative thinking, empathy, and bold action.
“Every step you take in this journey, every class, every challenge is shaping you to become a protector of health and justice. You may not see the full impact today, but one day, you’ll look back and realize: you made a difference.”
“Don’t wait to feel ready. You are ready enough. The world doesn’t need perfect public health professionals. It needs passionate, persistent ones. And that includes you,” she said.

There was presentation of awards to the overall best student, Mr. Eniayewu Louis and best behaved award to Daniel Wisdom Apoebi.
The best inductee, Mr. Eniayewu Louis in his valedictory speech, charged his colleagues to impact the society by touching the lives of the people. Also, various awards were given to students who exemplified themselves during the course of their program.
