U3A Nigeria Opens Applications for Gerontology and Geriatric Care Programme

A new professional training programme aimed at strengthening knowledge and expertise in gerontology and geriatric care management is set to commence in Ibadan, Oyo State, under the auspices of U3A Nigeria in collaboration with University of Toulouse U3A in France
.

Newsline NG learnt that the programme, organised by U3A Nigeria – Nigeria French International U3A, is designed to provide specialised training for professionals and individuals interested in the care and management of elderly persons.

The initiative reflects growing global attention to ageing populations and the need for trained professionals to manage age-related health and social challenges.

Speaking with our correspondent, The President, U3A Nigeria, Prof Charles Afolabi said, "the training will be open to a wide range of participants including doctors, nurses, health practitioners, geriatricians, gerontologists, caregivers, medical students and public health practitioners. 


"Members of the police, armed forces, policy makers, professionals from various fields, graduates, migrants and individuals seeking to switch careers are also encouraged to apply.


" The programme will run in two categories — a six-month certificate course and a one-year diploma programme which includes a compulsory internship component.

" The internship is designed to give participants practical exposure and hands-on experience in geriatric care management.


"At the completion of either programme, successful participants will be admitted into appropriate membership grades of the Gerontology Nigeria Services International, an organisation committed to advancing research, education and services relating to ageing and elderly care.


Prof. Afolabi further explained that the certification for the programme will be jointly awarded by U3A Nigeria and the University of Toulouse U3A, France, thereby providing participants with internationally recognised credentials in the field of gerontology and geriatric care.

"Applicants interested in the programme are required to possess any of the following qualifications: First Degree, Higher National Diploma (HND), Ordinary National Diploma (OND), Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) or WAEC, with relevant experience in health-related practice.


"The application fee for the programme has been fixed at ₦10,000, payable to the organisers through the designated account provided by UNI3A Nigeria Concept at UBA.


"The training programme is scheduled to begin on April 27, 2026, and will take place at the Jubilee Conference Centre located along Obafemi Awolowo Way in the Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
