The Ondo State Deputy Governor, Honourable Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has called on corps employers in the state to adequately renumerate corps members posted to them for the mandatory one year national service.
Honourable Aiyedatiwa made the call in his goodwill message read during the 2021 NYSC Ondo State Corps Employers Workshop held in Akure, the state capital.
The Deputy Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa said that corps employers who desire the best services from corps members should be willing to make them comfortable.
"Distinguished corps employers, we should complement the effort of the Federal Government and motivate the graduate youths posted to your establishment with your resources if you want the best from them".
"NYSC as a veritable institution has mobilised and deployed graduate youths to all the states of the federation and the only way to make them comfortable and give you the best services is to display love and affection towards them as you would to your biological children" he said.
The number two citizen in the Sunshine State charged the corps members to see themselves as part of every organisation they are posted to serve and not to assume the status of contract staff whose assignment finishes at the expiration of the terms of engagement.
"Gentlemen corps members, Ondo State holds NYSC in high esteem and you have more to contribute to the overall development of this country and in so doing, you will leave a lasting legacy that would be too difficult to erase at the end of your service year" he concluded.
The Director General of NYSC Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim in his keynote address said that the Scheme has positioned the young men and women on National Service as change agents and key contributors to the development of the country.
Speaking on the theme, 'Optimising the NYSC/Corps Employers Partnership for National Development in the context of the New Normal, the Associate Professor emphasised on the collective roles towards sustaining the impact of the Scheme in the face of the challenges thrown up by the COVID -19 pandemic.
"However, the pandemic provided opportunity for the NYSC to once again assert its continued relevance through the harnessing of the knowledge, skills and talents of our young men and women on National Service. While the nation was on lockdown, the Scheme remained very visible through various interventions in support of the overall national efforts to contain the virus".
Ibrahim, who was recently honoured with the Fellowship of the Historical Society of Nigeria (FHSN) called on the corps employers to continue to carry corps members along in their respective workplaces with priority attention given to their safety.
The Army General who was represented by an Assistant Director in the Southwest Area Office, Chief Tunde Fadairo disclosed that NYSC Management placed high premium on the security of lives and property of corps members throughout the service year.
"Accordingly, corps employers are required to equally pay particular attention to the security of corps members posted to your organisations. Given the fact that they are new in the environment, you are enjoined to effectively guide them on safety" he said.
The NYSC boss reminded the corps employers that they have no authority to approve leave or movement of corps members outside the states of deployment.
"As the first point in the established channels of communication, you can only endorse their applications for leave permits to the State Coordinator. Also, only the Director General is vested with the authority to approve travels outside the country".
The workshop which was well attended by corps employers from all the Local Governments in the state had seasoned and erudite scholars who did justice to the two papers presented.
The first paper with the subtitle 'Role of Stakeholders in challenge of Corps Administration: Rejection, Under-utilisation and evasion of Service was competently handled by renowned educationist, Dr. Adedayo Adedeji, a retired Deputy Registrar at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko while the second paper with the title 'The role of an ideal Corps Employer as catalyst for effective service delivery was dissected by a Medical Consultant with Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Dr. Ifedayo Fashoranti.
The well attended event witnessed presentation of Plaque to the Best Employer in the Zone and this was won by Federal Medical Centre, Owo while Police Clinic, Akure and Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin got Commendation Certificate for their efforts.
The State Coordinator in her vote of thanks appreciated all the corps employers for the commitment shown towards the workshop and promised to improve on the interface with various organisations to achieve the desired and workable objectives of the workshop.
Mrs. Ani appreciated the State Government under the purposeful leadership of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN) for the unwavering support the Scheme is enjoying in the Sunshine State.
