The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim has affirmed that assemblage of graduate youths from diverse ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds is to offer them the opportunity for broader understanding of the country.
The Director General made the affirmation in his address read at the Swearing in Ceremony for the 2022 Batch 'A' (Stream II) corps members deployed to Ondo State.
Represented by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ikare-Akoko, Ibrahim said that the Scheme will also entrench the culture of working together in an atmosphere filled with friendship, peace, harmony and shared vision of a great and prosperous Nigeria.
He implored them to sustain the high level of discipline and enthusiasm they have demonstrated so far since the commencement of the orientation course and admonished them to abstain from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices.
The NYSC boss, an Associate Professor disclosed that one of the major objectives of NYSC is promoting of national unity and integration, and urged them to avoid using the social media for spreading fake news, fueling of hatred and other negative purposes.
The Director General who is a Fellow, Historical Society of Nigeria (FHSN) said that the corps members should ensure compliance with the camp rules and regulations since the programme is designed to equip them with the tasks of the service year through lessons on the cardinal programmes such as leadership coaching, paramilitary drills and other physical trainings as well as sensitisation on topical national issues.
"The orientation course, among others, is a platform for kick-starting various activities that will enable you realise your potentials and attain individual feats both within and beyond the service year. I therefore enjoin you to avail yourselves of this once-in-a-life-time opportunity by participating actively in all the camp activities".
While reminding the corps members that the white-collar jobs are not readily available, the Director General encouraged them to avail themselves of opportunities for self-employment offered through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme established by the Scheme.
"You are expected to choose from any of the skill areas, and make yourselves available for the training, which starts from the orientation camp. On our part, management will continue to work with relevant stakeholders for the success of the programme" he said.
He charged the corps members to be security conscious at all times, and request them to report any suspicious characters or activities around them to the appropriate authorities.
During the Oath of Allegiance administration, the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Honourable Justice Williams Akintoroye charged the newly inducted corps members to be selfless and committed to the service of the fatherland.
The Chief Judge, who was competently represented by Honourable Justice John Olajide Abe while explaining the significance of the oath taken to the 1748 registered corps members made up of 975 males and 773 females said that the wordings should guide their conduct throughout the service year and beyond.
