The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan, Most Rev. Joseph Akinfenwa, has urged Nigerians to work together to rebuild trust and promote unity in the country as Christians celebrate Christmas.
Akinfenwa gave the advice on Wednesday in his Christmas message made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.
He urged leaders and citizens to align and embrace the message of love, hope and peace that Christmas represents.
The bishop called on the government to take more decisive and sincere steps to secure lives and property.
According to him, security should not be politicised, while intelligence gathering, proper equipping of security forces and a just legal system are crucial.
“Let there be a genuine commitment to good governance, equitable distribution of resources and education.
“These are long-term solutions to unrest and criminality, as banditry thrives where injustice, poverty and impunity reign,” he said.
The Anglican bishop remarked that Christmas should be celebrated with reverence and reflection and not primarily as a time for extravagance.
He enjoined Christians to use the season to show love, give to the needy, seek peace and reflect Christ’s light in their communities.
“Worship, prayer and acts of kindness should be central, especially in these challenging times.
“The essence of Christmas lies not just in the historical event, but in its spiritual impact, a reminder of God’s gift to humanity and a call for us to extend love to one another,” Akinfenwa said. (NAN)
